This caused the Song of Evil and the Song of the Enemy to continue bursting to life as Kino and his family thwarting attempted thefts and ran from the trackers sent to find him and take the pearl. The pearl created much greed and conflict. He planned to get married to Juana in the church and to have his son educated. The Song of the Family continued in Kino’s mind as he made plans for the future with the wealth provided by the pearl. However, the song was weak because the only evil of the priest was that he was greedy and wanted the pearl in order to maintain and improve his church. He never even considered that the priest was the one causing the Song of Evil to sound. And Kino looked at his neighbors to see who might have brought this song in.” Kino noticed the evil in the room, however, he didn’t know to what it was connected to. When he was talking to them, Kino noticed “the music of evil, of the enemy, sounded, but it was faint and weak. Later that evening, after Kino had discovered the “Pearl of the World”, the priest came to visit the family in their home. “The music had gone out of Kino’s head” when the poison left Coyotito’s body. When Kino went pearling that day, he heard the “melody of the maybe pearl shrill in his ears.” This pearl that called to him proved to be a giant pearl that must be worth quite a lot of money. When the scorpion bites Coyotito, a new song comes into Kino’s mind “the Song of Evil, the music of the enemy, of any foe of the family, a savage, secret, dangerous melody, and underneath, the Song of the Family cried plaintively… and the Song of the Enemy roared in his ears.” The Song of the Enemy continued sounding in Kino’s ears as they rushed to the doctor and were denied assistance. Kino first notes this song in the morning, while the sun is rising and he can hear his wife, Juana, getting breakfast ready and his baby son, Coyotito, waking up. In fact, the “Song of the Family” was sounding throughout almost the entirety of the novel. The first, and most reoccurring, song was the “Song of the Family”. After all, “is people had once been great makers of songs so that everything they saw or thought or did or heard became a song.” Kino continues this tradition himself even though he did not know if “he alone did this perhaps all of his people did it.” Either way, throughout the novel, changes in mood and various events are brought to attention by the music. The story’s protagonist, Kino, hears a song inside of his head that corresponds with his emotions, feelings, and the plot twists throughout the novel.
